It lights more easily, produces a strong flame and gives off more usable heat than freshly cut or poorly seasoned wood. What makes kiln dried hardwood logs different?

Freshly felled timber contains a high level of water. Before it can burn efficiently, much of the heat from the fire has to drive that moisture out. This is why wet logs hiss and steam, create thick smoke and give a disappointing amount of warmth.

Kiln drying reduces the moisture content in a controlled environment. Logs are placed in a purpose-built kiln, where warm air is circulated around them until they reach a suitable level for burning. Good firewood suppliers will generally provide logs with a moisture content of below 20 per cent, in line with the standard expected for ready-to-burn domestic fuel.

Hardwood refers to timber from broad-leaved trees such as ash, beech, oak, birch and sycamore. These woods are often denser than softwoods, so they tend to burn for longer and provide a steady heat once the fire is established. The exact performance depends on the species, log size and your appliance, but hardwood is a popular choice for log burners, open fires and wood-burning cookers.

Why dry wood gives you a better fire

The main benefit is simple: dry logs burn the wood rather than spending much of the fire’s energy boiling off water. That gives you a quicker light, a brighter flame and more consistent heat output.

This also helps reduce the visible smoke created during lighting and refuelling. Less smoke is better for the comfort of your household and your neighbours, particularly in built-up areas. It can also reduce the build-up of soot and tar in a stove and flue, although regular sweeping and appliance maintenance are still essential.

Kiln dried logs are convenient, too. Properly seasoned firewood can be excellent, but it needs enough time, airflow and correct storage to dry naturally. Depending on the timber and conditions, that may take a year or more. Kiln dried loads arrive ready to use, which is particularly useful when you need fuel promptly or do not have the space to season your own wood.

There is a cost consideration. Kiln dried hardwood usually costs more than unseasoned timber because of the processing, handling and energy involved. However, cheaper wet wood can be false economy. If it produces less heat, burns poorly and requires more logs to keep a room warm, the saving can quickly disappear.

Hardwood is not always the whole story

It is sensible to choose fuel for the way you use your fire. Dense hardwood logs are well suited to a longer, steadier burn in the evening. Softer woods can light quickly and make useful kindling, but they generally burn faster and may need topping up more often.

Ash is often valued because it lights readily and burns well. Oak is dense and can give a long-lasting fire, though it benefits from being properly dry. Birch offers an attractive flame but may burn more quickly than denser hardwoods. A mixed hardwood load can therefore be a practical choice, giving a good balance of easy lighting and lasting heat.

The most important point is not simply the label on the bag or load. Ask whether the logs are genuinely dry, how their moisture content is checked and whether they are suitable for your particular appliance. A well-run stove with dry mixed hardwood will usually outperform a poorly operated stove filled with any type of wood.

How to recognise quality kiln dried hardwood logs

Good logs should feel dry and relatively light for their size. Their ends often show cracks or splits from the drying process, and they should not feel damp or cold to the touch. You may notice a cleaner, sharper sound when two dry logs are knocked together, though a moisture meter is the most reliable way to check.

Log size matters as much as dryness. Firewood should fit your stove without forcing the door shut or blocking the air flow. Before ordering, measure the usable firebox length rather than estimating from the outside of the appliance. Smaller logs are often easier to manage in compact stoves, while larger pieces can be useful for bigger burners and open fires.

Also consider how the logs are supplied. A loose-tipped load, stacked load, barrow bag and netted bag can all be useful, but the stated quantity should be clear. A neatly stacked cubic metre contains a different amount of wood from a loose cubic metre, because the gaps between logs are different. Knowing what you are buying makes it easier to compare prices fairly.

Storing logs properly after delivery

Even the best dried firewood can take on moisture if it is left exposed to the weather. Store logs outside or in a well-ventilated log store, raised off the ground and protected from rain on the top and sides most exposed to weather. Open fronts or slatted sides allow air to move through the stack.

Avoid sealing logs in an airtight shed, garage or plastic cover. A completely enclosed space can trap damp air and encourage mould. It is also wise not to bring a large store of logs into the house. Keep a small basket or rack indoors for immediate use, and leave the main supply in a dry outdoor store.

Stacking is worth the effort. Place logs bark-side up where possible, keep them clear of soil and vegetation, and do not pack them so tightly that air cannot circulate. If your store is close to the house, ensure it does not create a route for pests or obstruct access around the property.

Getting the best from your stove or open fire

Start with dry kindling and a firelighter suitable for wood burners. Build a small fire with enough airflow rather than piling on large logs straight away. Once a good bed of embers has formed, add one or two hardwood logs at a time and adjust the appliance controls in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.

Do not shut the air supply down too early in an attempt to make logs last longer. Starving a fire of oxygen can lead to smouldering, smoke and deposits inside the flue. A clean, efficient fire needs dry fuel, a sound installation and a chimney or flue that is swept at appropriate intervals.

For open fires, remember that much of the heat can go up the chimney. They are excellent for atmosphere and can provide useful warmth nearby, but a modern wood burner is generally the more efficient option for heating a room. Whichever appliance you have, only burn suitable untreated wood. Painted, varnished, glued or waste timber can release harmful fumes and should never go on the fire.
